Director of Operations

St. John’s Episcopal Church – Midland, Michigan

St. John’s Episcopal Church is seeking to hire a 30-hour-per-week, exempt Director of Operations for a term of three years to help build a strong administrative foundation to support mission, ministry, communications, and growth. This position will work closely with the Rector, staff, and lay leadership to strengthen internal systems while also helping St. John’s share its story more effectively through strategic communications, digital presence, and community engagement.

The Director of Operations will oversee daily operations, support staff and volunteer coordination, lead internal and external communications, and help develop sustainable systems that allow clergy and ministry leaders to focus on their areas of call. This role is both strategic and collaborative—ideal for someone who is organized, relational, systems-minded, and passionate about helping organizations thrive and be seen.

Position Summary

The Director of Operations is a key leadership role that combines administrative coordination with strategic communication and storytelling. The DOO will help strengthen workflow, planning, financial and facilities support, and digital and public presence, ensuring that St. John’s operates smoothly, communicates clearly, and is well represented in the community. This is a 30-hour-per-week position with regular in-person presence required. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience. The position is currently approved for a term of three years.

Key Responsibilities

Administrative & Workflow Management

Oversee daily operations and office systems
Coordinate scheduling, calendaring, and communications across ministries
Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to improve clarity and efficiency
Support staff and volunteer coordination across multiple ministry areas
Provide operational updates to the Rector and Vestry

Communications, Marketing & Public Engagement

Lead internal and external communications with clarity and mission alignment
Manage website, email newsletters, and social media platforms
Strengthen digital presence and outreach to newcomers and the broader community
Promote parish programs, events, and stories to increase visibility and engagement
Support branding, messaging, and public-facing materials across platforms
Help tell the story of St. John’s through strategic communication, marketing, and relational outreach

Financial & Resource Support (in collaboration with Bookkeeper and Treasurer)
Support budgeting processes, reporting, and expense management
Ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures
Help steward resources responsibly and transparently

People & Staff Support
Support staff supervision, communication, and team culture
Assist with onboarding, training, and performance processes
Maintain updated job descriptions, reporting structures, and organizational clarity

Facilities, Events & Technology Coordination
Assist with vendor coordination and facility scheduling
Support building usage, event logistics, and planning workflows
Help ensure reliable use of technology and digital tools

Qualifications

Required Skills
Experience in operations, communications, nonprofit administration, or project management
Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills—written and verbal
Ability to develop and implement systems for clarity and efficiency
Comfortable using digital tools (Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, website builders, email and social media platforms)
Ability to lead collaboratively, delegate effectively, and maintain trust

Desired Qualities
Experience in church, nonprofit, educational, or community organizations
Ability to build relationships and foster a supportive, mission-focused culture
Skill in storytelling, branding, digital communication, or public engagement
Alignment with the mission, values, and welcoming spirit of St. John’s

Compensation

Salary Range: $40,000–$48,000 (based on experience)
